Gender Equality

The Observatory on Gender Equity was established in 2021 in collaboration with the Department of Economics “Marco Biagi” of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, with the aim of scientifically studying the phenomenon of gender inequalities through research activities, and providing tools and policy proposals, thanks to training and consultancy activities to disseminate skills to make gender equity policies more effective and provide tools that are really able to produce change.

The issues on which the Observatory focuses are gender inequalities in training and skills acquisition – with a particular focus on the gender gap in the STEM area and the fallout in the digital economy – in the labour market, giving rise to phenomena of economic discrimination, both gender and sexual orientation, and the legal instruments for protection against such discrimination. The Observatory also assesses the impact of public policies and gender reporting and measures gender equity in organisations from a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) perspective.

The Observatory’s objectives include those aimed to carry out research activities and intervene concretely, both by proposing training modules on well-being and gender equality, with reference to theoretical frameworks, measurement, reporting and impact assessment of policies and organisational models, and by providing consultancy in the realisation of programme tools and gender reporting, such as the Gender Balance Sheet and the Gender Equality Plan (GEP), in a gender mainstreaming perspective.

Activities of the Observatory

Education

The Observatory organises seminar activities on Diversity, Gender Equity & Well-being issues. The Observatory collaborated in the training initiatives carried out within the GE&PA Project – Gender Equality & Public Administration.

The Observatory offers training modules aimed at acquiring knowledge on the measurement of gender inequalities, the design of gender reporting tools (Gender Equality Plan, Gender Balance Sheet), legal instruments for protection against gender discrimination and the design of policies and practices to foster LGBTQIA+ inclusive working environments.

Research

The Observatory’s research activities focus on the study of the determinants of gender inequalities in educational pathways and the acquisition of skills, and on the measurement of their effects in the labour market, which give rise to economic discrimination phenomena, both in employment and wages.

Anti-discrimination policies and the evaluation of their impact are another key focus of the research, as well as economic discrimination towards the LGBTQIA+ community in education, access to the labour market, career paths and wage gaps.
